Seed treatments are possible for both conventional and organic spinach production. Seed treatments may reduce inoculum loads or switch to another mode of action. For example, Metalaxyl was effective in reducing downy mildew in spinach plants that were less than a week old. To treat seed in organic production, you can use hot water or botanicals. Treatments that contain antagonistic microbial strains of seeds are also beneficial.

FAQ

What is a planting schedule?

A planting calendar is a list that lists plants that should be planted at specific times throughout the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. Fall crops include cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and cauliflower.

What seeds should be started indoors?

A tomato seed makes the best seed for indoor planting. Tomatoes are easy to grow, and they produce fruit all year round. You should be cautious when putting tomatoes into pots. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

You might be wondering if you have enough space to grow a vegetable garden if you don't have one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. You could also use containers to replace raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

How can you prepare the soil to grow vegetables in your garden?

Preparing soil for a vegetable garden is easy. First, get rid of all weeds. You can then add organic matter, such as composted cow manure, leaves and grass clippings. Water well, and wait for the plants to sprout.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
