How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
