How to make Hay Bale gardening a success

tips for planting garden

These tips can help you create successful straw bale gardens, regardless of whether you are a seasoned gardener or a beginner. Bales need to be constructed properly to maximize the space. You should not overwater them as this could cause water to run through them and remove nutrients. You should treat the bales with dolomitic lime and a balanced fertilizer once a week.

After you have plowed the bales, add organic fertilizer to them on days four and six. You can choose between half a cup of urea (46-0-0) or one cup of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0). The numbers following the fertilizer names indicate the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous in the product. If you choose a high nitrogen source, it will speed the process of decomposition and conditioning. To keep the mixture moist and free from weeds, you can water the bales daily.

The bales should be watered daily. Sprinkle fertilizer on the bales every day. To keep the soil moist, you can add a bit of seaweed or compost tea to the mix before you plant. A piece of old cloth can be added, which will cause the straw to decay. You should monitor your bales daily to ensure they get enough moisture. You can use drip irrigation to ensure that the bales stay moist. You can fertilize your bales using the same organic fertilizer that you would use in an in-ground vegetable gardening.

After your straw bale garden has been planted, it's time to start planting seeds. Planting seedslings or transplants is possible as well. To prevent disease and overcrowding, make sure you have enough space between the plants. The most important part of your straw bale garden is to water it properly every two to three weeks, because the soil will dry out and break down over time. Landscape fabric can be used to cover it.

You should wait for the straw bales to reach 150°F before you plant. By day 10, the temperature will become too high for plants to grow. You can soak the bales for a couple days in water to reach the desired pH level. Now it is time to plant them. It's now time to remoisturize and fertilize the soil.

gardening tips for beginners small

You should ensure that you choose plants that need a lot of sun when planting straw bale gardens. Although tomatoes can be grown without any special fertilizer you should still plant them in areas that receive six to eight hours of sun per day. You'll need to take care with the soil as the bales may be too heavy. After they have been watered, it will be necessary to help set them up.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
