Making it Easy to Weed

gardening ideas using wood pallets

How to Prepare for Easy Weeding

Your garden can become overgrown with weeds, so be prepared for easy weeding. Spray the ground with water before you begin weeding, and you will find it easier to remove weeds. You can weed by hand if you have seedlings that are young. You can remove unwanted seedlings from their base. Once you have a handle on what type of weed to remove, you can start your weeding.

gardening recommendations

You can make the task of weeding easier by covering your garden with clear plastic sheets in the spring. This will warm the soil and encourage weeds to germinate. Before planting your crops, you should get rid of weeds as soon as they are several inches tall. Keep in mind that not all weeds are edible. Here are some helpful tips:

Soak the soil. The soil should be moist. Weed seeds will germinate quicker in moist soil than in dry soil. It is important to soak the soil before weed seeds can surface and grow deep. Weed seeds can be difficult to remove from soil that is dry. It is important to weed regularly or you will run into problems. You should also use a high quality weed killer. You can use a weed killer to kill one weed and also kill other undesirable plants.

A hoe is the best tool for pulling weeds. Young weeds will be easier to pull. However, as they age they become more difficult to remove. The easiest way to get rid of weeds is to use a hoe with an extremely thin blade that moves horizontally below the soil's surface. Make sure you remove as much root as possible. If you have trouble removing the weeds, use a spade or digging fork to remove their persistent roots.

Be sure to remove all weeds before you begin tilling the soil. It is easier to pull weeds when the soil has a soft, moist texture. You should rake up weeds with deep roots once it has rained. They are more likely to grow where there is little competition. Bald patches can encourage weeds. You can cover the bare patches with mulch or plant a covering crop to keep them from drying out.

horticulture tips

Weeding is not only a chore but can also be a relaxing activity. You don't need to think much so you can listen to music while working in your garden. To distract yourself from weeding, you can use headphones, a foreign language or an audiobook. If your lawn is very steep, you can use a camp stool.

Another way to make weeding easier is to use a hoe. These tools are excellent for removing larger amounts of weeds. They require little effort and are gentler on the surrounding grass. The hoe can leave divots on the grass and expose the soil below if it is not used correctly. Using a hoe can also be dangerous, as you can accidentally hit a flower or a weed seedling, and you could expose yourself to dormant seeds.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
