How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of the most versatile herbs you can use in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. If you plan to grow it outside, make sure there is good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted two weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination usually takes about 10 days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Take off the plastic wrap and transfer the seedlings to larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. You can add more potting mix if necessary. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. To prevent wilting, mist the plants every day.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. You can also use a timer for the irrigation system to be turned off during dry spells.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can be dried on paper towels or screens. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
