FAQ

Which layout is best for vegetable gardens?

It is important to consider where you live when planning your vegetable garden. For easy harvesting, you can plant vegetables together if the area is large. However, if you live in a rural area, you should space out your plants for maximum yield.

When is the best month to plant a vegetable garden in my area?

Planting vegetables in April and June is the best time. This is when soil is at its warmest and plants are growing the fastest. If you live in a cold climate, you may want to wait until July or August.

How much light does a tree need?

It depends on the plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Some prefer 8 hours of indirect sunshine. The majority of vegetables require 10 hours of direct sunshine per 24 hour period.

Do I have to purchase special equipment in order to grow vegetables on my own?

It's not true. All you need are a trowel or shovel and a watering can.

What's the best way to keep my indoor plant alive?

Indoor plants can survive up to ten years. To ensure new growth, it's important that you repot indoor plants every few years. It's easy to repot your plant. Simply remove the soil and add new compost.

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

If you don’t yet have a vegetable gardening, you might wonder if it will be possible. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. Raised beds can be built as low as 6 inches. Or, you could use containers instead of raised beds. You will still have plenty of produce, regardless of which method you choose.

What vegetables can you grow together?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. Both are great companions as tomatoes require heat to ripen, while peppers need cooler temperatures to achieve their best flavor. If you want to try growing them together, start seeds indoors about six weeks before planting them. When the weather is warm, transplant the pepper and tomato plants outside.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
