FAQ

How often should I water my indoor plants?

Indoor plants need to be watered every two days. You can maintain humidity in the house by watering. Humidity can be vital for plants that are healthy.

What kind of lighting works best for growing plants indoors?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They can also provide steady lighting without flickering and dimming. There are two types of fluorescent bulbs: regular and compact fluorescent (CFL). CFLs are up to 75% cheaper than traditional bulbs.

How can you prepare the soil to grow vegetables in your garden?

Preparing soil for a vegetable garden is easy. You must first remove all weeds from the area you wish to plant vegetables. Then, add organic matter such as composted manure, leaves, grass clippings, straw, or wood chips. Then water the plants well and wait for them to sprout.

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

Growing tomatoes and peppers together is excellent because they both like similar temperatures and soil conditions. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

What should I do the first time you want to start a vegetable garden?

Preparing the soil is the most important step in starting a garden. This includes adding organic material such as composted horse manure, grass clippings or leaves, straw and the like, which provides plant nutrients. Next, plant seeds or seedlings into prepared holes. Then, water well.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal of a planting calendar is to maximize plant growth and minimize stress. So, for example, spring crops such as lettuce, spinach, or peas should not be sown before the last frost date. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. Fall crops include carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and potatoes.

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening is a method that uses water to nourish plants instead of soil. Aquaponics combines fish tanks with plants to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. It's almost like having a farm right at home.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
