FAQ

How do I know what type of soil I have?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. You can also do soil tests. These tests measure the number of nutrients present in the soil.

When should you plant herbs?

When the soil temperature is 55°F, herbs should be planted in spring. Plant them in full sun for best results. To grow basil indoors, place seedlings in pots filled with potting mix and keep them out of direct sunlight until they sprout leaves. When plants are growing, place them in bright indirect lighting. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
