FAQ

What's the first thing you should do when you begin a garden project?

The first thing you should do when starting a new garden is prepare the soil. This includes adding organic material such as composted horse manure, grass clippings or leaves, straw and the like, which provides plant nutrients. Next, plant seedlings or seeds in the prepared holes. Water thoroughly.

What is a planting plan?

A planting schedule is a list listing the dates when plants should be planted. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include cabbage, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and cauliflower.

How long can an indoor plant be kept alive?

Indoor plants can live for many years. It is vital to repot your plants every few months in order to encourage new growth. Repotting is easy. All you have to do is remove the soil and put in fresh compost.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

The combination of tomatoes and peppers is great because they love the same temperatures and soil conditions. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
