How to Garden Organically in Your Backyard

gardening organically

Organic gardening requires soil rich in organic matter. This is essential because organic materials are the best source of nutrients. It is important to remember that organic products can be more expensive than conventional ones. Because they are often less marketable, organic produce may not store or ship as well. Additionally, organic produce may not last as long as traditional vegetables. Because organic methods rely on natural resources, organic gardening may require the use of cover crops, green manure, and crop rotation. The organic gardener can limit the natural resource impact by using these cover crops and green manure. Also, he or she can improve soil without artificial fertilizer.

For anyone looking to convert to organic gardening, the first step is to improve soil. Organic gardening is a more labor-intensive and time-consuming option than traditional gardening. This will allow you to grow fresher, better food for your family. The transition to organic gardening will take time and commitment, as with all new processes. However, the benefits are worth it. It does not matter if you grow flowers, vegetables, or herbs. However, you will need to research the subject and make a commitment.

Sulfur can be used to control certain diseases such as mites. But, sulfur is not ideal for organic gardening. It can affect soil microorganisms as well as beneficial insects. In addition, sulfur can burn the plants in humid weather. If you are using sulfur on a large scale it is better to use a wetable sulfur. There are many types of sulfur available, including Lime-SulfurTM and ThioluxTM.

Biological tillage means that the soil is not cultivated using mechanical methods. This involves the use organisms to aerate soil. Large creatures use soil to aerate it. As a soil additive, a third part of compost is added. To ensure that the soil does not disturb the organisms, the gardener should carefully turn it. The gardener then can plant the vegetable. This process will be much easier than using a machine to tillage.

Gardeners can use several pest control techniques to keep the soil clean. Small paper or plastic cups can be used to place young transplants in the soil. You can also use aluminum foil or a 6-inch length of sewerpipe to achieve the same effect. Nylon bird mesh can also be used to protect young seedlings from birds. These methods are very effective at controlling pests and weeds.

Lastly, gardening organically means avoiding chemicals. Your plants need water to grow. Also, ensure your plants have the proper amount of oxygen in order to stop pests and fungi destroying them. Incorporating beneficial insects into your soil is another organic way to grow plants. Beneficial bugs will also feed on harmful pests to your plants. But make sure you do not over-water them as it may cause a fungal infection.

FAQ

What kind of lighting works best for growing plants indoors?

Because they emit less heat that incandescents, floriescent lights are a good choice for growing indoor plants. They also provide consistent lighting without flickering or dimming. Fluorescent bulbs come in both compact fluorescent (CFL) and regular varieties. CFLs are up to 75% cheaper than traditional bulbs.

What is the difference between hydroponic gardening and aquaponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening uses nutrient-rich water instead of soil to feed plants. Aquaponics is a system that combines fish tanks and plants to create an ecosystem that is self-sufficient. You can have your farm right at your house!

What is a planting calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal of a planting calendar is to maximize plant growth and minimize stress. The last frost date should be used to sow early spring crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and beans. Summer beans, squash, cucumbers and squash are all later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and potatoes.

Which month is the best to start a vegetable gardening?

From April to June is the best season for vegetables. This is when the soil gets warmest, and plants tend to grow quickly. You might want to wait until July/August if you live in a cold area.

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

The combination of tomatoes and peppers is great because they love the same temperatures and soil conditions. They can complement each other because tomatoes require heat to mature, and peppers require lower temperatures for their optimal flavor. You can try planting them together by starting seeds indoors six weeks before transplanting them outdoors. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

Which seeds should start indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes can be grown quickly and they bear fruit all year. It is important to be careful when planting tomatoes in containers. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

How often do I need to water my indoor plants?

Indoor plants require watering at least once a day. You can maintain humidity in the house by watering. Humidity is essential for healthy plants.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
