When to Water a Garden - The Best Way to Water Flower Beds

garden tip

You can use common sense if you aren't sure when to water your gardens. The ideal time to water a garden is when there has been a recent rain. You should add enough water to reach the roots of your plants, five to six inches in depth. Watering after a rain shower does not add any moisture to the soil. It evaporates quickly and leaves only surface-level water. Also, light rain showers don't build a soil water reserve.

Use a watering tool or can if you have a small garden. For larger gardens, a hose fitted with a high-quality nozzle is recommended. You can lay the hose directly on top of the soil. To prevent soil erosion, make sure you place a board or rock underneath the hose. You can also dig a trench around your plants to let the water flow into the trench. But, don't water too often.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
