How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil can be used to flavor dishes and add flavor to sauces, soups, pasta, and desserts. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. Basil likes full sunlight but can be tolerant of partial shade. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted two weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in small pots filled with potting mix. Place the pots in clear plastic wrap. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Germination typically takes around ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Add potting mix to each container. Add more potting mixes as necessary. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels to dry leaves. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
