FAQ

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. Therefore, 100 pounds of seeds is required for a surface of 10 feet x 10 feet (3 m x 3 m).

How do you prepare soil for a vegetable gardening?

Preparing soil is simple for a vegetable garden. You must first remove all weeds from the area you wish to plant vegetables. You can then add organic matter, such as composted cow manure, leaves and grass clippings. Water well, and wait for the plants to sprout.

How many hours of light does a plant need?

It depends on the type of plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 hours of indirect sunlight. Most vegetables need 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

Is there enough space in my backyard to grow a vegetable garden.

If you don’t yet have a vegetable gardening, you might wonder if it will be possible. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. You can also use containers as raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

What time should I plant herbs in my garden?

Plant herbs in spring when the soil temperatures are 55 degrees Fahrenheit. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. To grow basil indoors you need to place the seedlings inside pots that have been filled with potting soil. Once they start sprouting leaves, keep them out from direct sunlight. Once plants start growing, move them into bright indirect light. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. The last frost date should be used to sow early spring crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and beans. Summer beans, squash, cucumbers and squash are all later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and potatoes.

How To

Basil growing tips

Basil is one the most versatile herbs that you can use in your home. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. If you plan to grow it outside, make sure there is good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds must be planted at the latest two weeks before last frost. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in small pots filled with potting mix. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination typically takes around ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Add potting mix to each container. You can add more potting mix if necessary. Place the containers in a sunny window or in indirect light. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. Once the danger of frost is over, cover the plants with a thick mulch layer. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. Pick leaves frequently to encourage bushier growth.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
